Press Release: Pennsylvania Skaters Set to Shine at the Roller Derby World Cup
Enola, PA – The emotional journey of roller derby skater Nahyomi Painter-Escudero epitomizes the spirit of the upcoming Roller Derby World Cup, taking place in Innsbruck, Austria. Painter-Escudero, reflecting on her small-town roots in Harrisburg, expressed her excitement: “I get goosebumps when I talk about it.” She is one of six Pennsylvania athletes participating in the esteemed event, which showcases 48 teams from around the globe.
Roller derby, experiencing a revival since the early 2000s, has transformed into an international amateur sport marked by a unique punk and drag culture. Teams often feature skaters with ties to specific countries or regions, along with borderless teams like Team Indigenous Rising and Team Desi.
Though Pennsylvania skaters won’t play for Team USA, they will represent various teams, including Team Puerto Rico and Jewish Roller Derby. Clarissa Christ, owner of Rage Parade skate shop, emphasized the dedication of these athletes, contributing financially to support their journey.
