PennDOT Announces Temporary Closure for Route 274 Culvert Replacement
PERRY COUNTY, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a short-term closure for the Route 274 culvert replacement project, affecting Montour Creek in Spring Township. Scheduled for July 8 through July 11, the closure allows contractors to safely set new box culvert sections using a large crane, which necessitates shutting down the structure.
During this period, traffic will be redirected via a detour using Route 74, Route 850, and Route 34. Once the project resumes on July 11, motorists can expect a single-lane reopening with temporary traffic signals in place for control.
This culvert replacement is a key component of a broader initiative involving three bridge projects throughout Perry County. Additional work includes box culvert replacements on Route 850 in Carroll Township and repairs to the Route 34 bridge over the Juniata River in Newport Borough. The Route 850 bridge work will commence in early summer, incorporating a temporary access road to facilitate two-way traffic around the work zone. Lane restrictions are anticipated for the Route 34 bridge project later this summer.
PennDOT has partnered with Lobar Site Development Corporation of Dillsburg for this $2.7 million project, with an anticipated completion date in December 2026. Motorists can stay informed about current road conditions by visiting www.511PA.com, which offers traffic updates and weather forecasts.
