The hero who confronted Pennsylvania church gunman speaks out: ‘I had to protect my pastor’s life’

In a shocking incident that made national headlines, an armed man entered Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, and aimed a gun at Pastor Glenn Germany during his Sunday sermon. Deacon Clarence McCallister, who was operating a camera, tackled the gunman to prevent another shot. The gun miraculously did not fire when the trigger was pulled, and no one was injured.

Police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Bernard Polite, who was later arrested at the church. Witnesses and police noted signs of mental illness in Polite, who claimed to have been “possessed by spirits.” A homicide investigation is underway after a deceased body was found in a nearby home where Polite had relatives.

McCallister, hailed as a hero for his quick actions, emphasized the seriousness of mental illness and the need to address it. Both McCallister and Pastor Germany expressed gratitude for the outcome and mentioned they had no prior knowledge or encounter with the suspect.

Polite is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person, and is being held without bail at the Allegheny County Jail. The suspect is due back in court on May 13. The community is urged to provide any information related to the incident by calling the tip line.

In the face of danger, the quick thinking and bravery of Deacon McCallister helped save lives, underscoring the importance of remaining vigilant and addressing mental health issues.
