Dauphin County Fire Chief Accuses Water Company of ‘Blatant Lie’ Over Discolored Water Explanation

Press Release: Controversy Over Water Discoloration in Dauphin and Perry Counties

Residents of Dauphin and Perry counties are facing issues with discolored water, prompting a debate between Veolia Water and local fire officials. Veolia Water attributed the discoloration to a fire hydrant used for training exercises, citing a "system disturbance" in Deer Path Woods. As a result, crews will conduct overnight flushing in Lower Paxton Township to tackle the issue.

However, Chief Larry Reist of Rescue Fire Company 37 strongly disputed Veolia’s claims. He stated that the hydrant was leaking and the water was already "dark brown and almost black" prior to their training on Tuesday. Reist criticized Veolia, arguing that their social media posts from earlier in the week indicate reports of water discoloration and pressure loss occurred before the hydrant usage.

He emphasized the need for transparency, highlighting contradictions within Veolia’s own statements. Despite the water provider’s assertion that the training exercise led to the issue, Reist noted that community feedback had indicated problems prior to the training, demanding accountability from Veolia.

In defense of their on-ground efforts, Veolia acknowledged the issues reported by residents on platforms such as Facebook, stating their focus remains on mitigating the discoloration.

Residents experiencing problems with their water supply are encouraged to directly contact Veolia’s customer service at 888-299-8972 for resolution reports, as social media comments are not monitored.

As the situation unfolds, the community and local officials continue to call for clearer communication and responsible action from water providers to ensure public safety and water quality.
