University of Pennsylvania Announces Coaching Change for Men’s Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA – In a significant shift for the men’s lacrosse program, the University of Pennsylvania has announced that Mike Murphy will not return as head coach for the upcoming season. The decision was shared by Alanna Wren, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W’69 Director of Athletics and Recreation.
Wren expressed gratitude for Murphy’s contributions over his 16-year tenure, stating, "I want to thank Mike for his service to Penn men’s lacrosse and its student-athletes for the past 16 seasons." She acknowledged the challenges facing the program and emphasized the need for new leadership to enhance competitiveness for Ivy and national championships.
Murphy’s impressive career at Penn spanned from 2010 to 2025, during which he amassed a record of 109 wins and 96 losses, with a 44-40 mark in Ivy League play. Prior to taking the helm, Murphy served as an assistant coach at Penn from 2001 to 2002.
In light of this announcement, the university will initiate a nationwide search for the next head coach immediately, aiming to find a candidate who can elevate the program to new heights. The search will be conducted in partnership with Elevate College, Executive Search and Consulting.
