Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide Returns After Nearly a Decade
Jan. 28, 2025 – EAGLES MERE, Pa. – The cherished Eagles Mere toboggan slide, crafted from lake ice, has returned to Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania, bringing joy to residents after nearly ten years of unseasonably warm winters that halted the beloved tradition. Established in 1904, the slide is skillfully constructed by local volunteer firefighters, who cut blocks of ice, weighing approximately 300 pounds each, from a local lake.
An impressive track is forged using around 150 ice blocks, arranged side-by-side, and extended down a hillside onto the frozen lake. The track stretches about a quarter-mile, allowing thrill-seekers to reach speeds of up to 45 mph. Snow is packed on the sides to secure the blocks; when snow is scarce, firefighters utilize a truck to spray water over the blocks, enabling them to freeze overnight.
Secretary/Treasurer Shelly Vest of the Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide Association shared insights on the challenges faced in recent years, noting that warmer temperatures have prevented reliable ice formation. For safe ice block cutting, the lake must freeze to a thickness of 11 to 12 inches. Fortunately, favorable weather conditions this year mean the slide could be operational for about a month.
This eagerly anticipated winter attraction serves as a thrilling experience for both locals and visitors, ensuring that the spirit of community celebrates its revival. As the tradition reestablishes itself, the Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide remains a unique winter pastime rich in history and camaraderie.
