First Alert Weather Day Issued Due to Extreme Heat in Western Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh Faces Third Consecutive 90-Degree Day Amidst Extreme Heat Warning

Pittsburgh is bracing for another day of intense heat, marking the third consecutive day with temperatures soaring into the 90s. The current heat wave, fueled by a potent ridge of high pressure, is expected to persist through the weekend, with high temperatures likely dipping to around 90 degrees beginning Wednesday.

Residents without air conditioning may struggle to find relief, as overnight lows will remain elevated, diminishing any chance of reprieve from the sweltering conditions. Experts recommend cool showers as an effective way to combat the relentless heat.

The ridge of high pressure, which has settled over the region, is set to drift southward. This shift will place Pittsburgh on the "ring of fire," a term used to describe the storms that typically develop around the outer edge of such ridges each afternoon. The initial edge of this ridge lies just north of I-80, presenting a slight severe weather risk today. As the ridge moves overhead on Wednesday, afternoon storm development is anticipated, bringing a temporary respite from the heat.

Today, expect mid-90s temperatures, accompanied by high humidity levels, with dew points reaching near 70 degrees. While there is a slight chance of rain today, significant rainfall is forecasted for the latter part of the week, particularly on Wednesday, which will feature the highest chance of downpours that could result in flash flooding.

Despite these potential storms, temperatures are expected to remain in the low 90s through at least Monday, with morning lows staying above 70. As the week progresses, residents are encouraged to prepare for continued heat and possible thunderstorms.

Stay hydrated and take necessary precautions as Pittsburgh navigates this summer heat wave.
