Gov. Shapiro Discusses Future of Sports Venues and NASCAR Potential in Pennsylvania
Pocono Raceway, PA – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently addressed the future of sports funding during an appearance at Pocono Raceway, as discussions around new sports arenas intensify. With the Philadelphia Eagles’ lease at Lincoln Financial Field set to expire in 2032, the governor remains non-committal on any state funding for a new stadium, noting conversations with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the Rooney family about their stadium needs.
While Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium opened in 2001 and the Linc in 2003, the prospect of a new stadium could emerge, with Lurie expressing mixed feelings about staying at the Linc or pursuing a new venue. Shapiro emphasized fiscal responsibility, stating that the state did not provide funding when the Philadelphia 76ers considered a new arena last year, adding, “I’m very worried about the overall budget.”
Highlighting the economic contributions of NASCAR, Shapiro discussed the sold-out Pocono NASCAR weekend, praising the venue’s ability to draw significant crowds, with approximately 50,000 grandstand tickets sold for the event.
NASCAR has also explored hosting a race in Philadelphia, specifically at Franklin Field. Shapiro expressed enthusiasm for additional racing opportunities while ensuring the focus remains on Pocono Raceway.
In a forward-looking tone, he mentioned Pennsylvania’s packed sports calendar, including the 2026 baseball All-Star Game, the World Cup at the Linc, and the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club. “I worked my ass off to bring that to Pittsburgh… I’m excited for them,” Shapiro said, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the state’s reputation as a sports hub.
As Pennsylvania positions itself for a vibrant sporting future, Shapiro continues to advocate for balanced investments in both sports and essential public services.
