Central Pennsylvania Humane Society Launches $2.7 Million Capital Campaign for New Shelter
The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society is embarking on an ambitious capital campaign to raise at least $2.7 million for a new shelter located at 2470 Old Sixth Avenue Road, Antis Township. Groundbreaking is set for mid-July, pending several permits, as announced by Joseph Zolna, president of the shelter’s board of directors.
The project, valued between $4.2 million and $6 million, will significantly enhance the shelter’s capacity, allowing it to care for up to 142 dogs and 100 cats—three times the current capacity. The aging facility, which accommodates a mere 24 large dogs and 60 cats, has become inadequate for the growing need in the community. The shelter’s inefficiencies and lack of space have prompted this decisive move.
Molly Amigh, the newly appointed outreach director, is spearheading the fundraising efforts, which will feature a multi-platform advertising campaign including television, radio, and social media to attract donations. With a background in program coordination and fundraising, Amigh is already making strides to clear the site for construction.
ABD Construction Services has been selected as the architect and general contractor, ensuring the project’s smooth progression. Upon completion of the new building, the existing facility at 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. will be sold.
Zolna expressed excitement, reflecting on the long-anticipated nature of the new shelter, while longtime board member Charlotte Ames Eichelberger called it a “dream come true,” emphasizing the benefits it will bring to the community and its animals.
Key features of the new 23,000-square-foot facility include larger accommodations, an on-site veterinary clinic for reduced-cost care, and improved spaces for animal exercise and cleaning efficiency. The project aims not only to enhance animal welfare but to ensure the shelter can meet future needs as well.
