Celebrities and Rugby Stars Join Forces for MND Research Cycle in Dublin

Sports Stars Honor Doddie Weir with Charity Cycle Across Ireland

Sports icons and celebrities completed a grueling 555-mile cycle around Ireland to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research, honoring the late rugby star Doddie Weir. The event, known as Doddie’5 Lions Challenge, began in Belfast and concluded in Dublin. Weir, who passed away from MND in November 2022 at age 52, was a passionate advocate for MND awareness and research throughout his illness.

Among the participants were former Scottish rugby stars Kenny and Gabby Logan, who cycled approximately 100 miles each day over six days. The couple revealed that thoughts of the "cruel" disease that robs people of bodily control motivated them through the toughest parts of the ride.

The journey saw jubilant celebrations upon reaching Stillorgan, with notable finishers including ex-footballer Ally McCoist, actor Jamie Bamber, and cancer campaigner Iain Ward. The cyclists are set to continue their mission by delivering the match ball for the British and Irish Lions’ upcoming match against Argentina in Dublin, further connecting their efforts to the rugby community.

Kenny Logan shared heartfelt anecdotes about the overwhelming support received from locals who donated food and drinks during the challenge. “It’s amazing,” he expressed, while Gabby Logan noted that the physically challenging final day offered stunning views that inspired reflection on their purpose.

The initiative has successfully raised over £557,000 (€651,000) for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Weir’s foundation. The Logans emphasized that their journey was not just for Weir, but to honor all individuals affected by MND, reinforcing their commitment to finding a cure for this devastating illness.
