Western Pennsylvania Politicians Split on Middle East Conflict

Pittsburgh Representatives Condemn Trump’s War Stance Amid Israel-Iran Conflict

In a passionate response to President Donald Trump’s ambiguous position on potential military engagement in the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, two Pittsburgh-area U.S. House members have called for congressional oversight. Rep. Summer Lee, a Democrat from Swissvale, criticized Trump’s failure to rule out military action without congressional approval, accusing him of seeking “executive overreach” during this precarious time. “Congressional authorization is not optional,” Lee emphasized, warning against the dangers of entering another prolonged conflict.

The remarks come as tensions rise following missile strikes between Israel and Iran, which reportedly have resulted in numerous fatalities on both sides. Under U.S. law, specifically the War Powers Act, the President is required to consult Congress before deploying military forces. Lee voiced concerns over what she termed “bloodlust for killings abroad” perpetuated by some lawmakers.

Contrastingly, local Republican representatives, including Reps. Mike Kelly and Guy Reschenthaler, remained largely silent on the Middle Eastern hostilities, instead focusing their efforts on domestic initiatives like illegal immigration and Trump’s proposed budget. Critics have voiced frustration over this avoidance, highlighting the need for accountability in Congress regarding matters of war.

Additionally, Rep. Chris Deluzio, a veteran, reiterated the constitutional principle that only Congress can declare war, stating, “No president has the power to start a war, with Iran or anyone else.”

As Trump hinted at potential military action — stating, “I may do it. I may not do it” — he faced backlash from lawmakers concerned about the implications of unilateral military decision-making. With rising casualties reported in the conflict, the call for a robust debate within Congress regarding U.S. military involvement has become increasingly urgent.
