Pennsylvania Sportsbooks Report Mixed Results Despite Record Revenue in May
June 19, 2025 – Pennsylvania
In May, Pennsylvania’s online and retail sportsbooks posted a total handle of $655.3 million, marking the lowest figure since August 2024. Although this represents a decrease from previous months, the state’s gross revenue reached $76.1 million—an impressive 23.3% increase year-over-year.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported that while the overall handle was up from $591.9 million in May 2024, it was the first month in 2025 to fall below the $700 million threshold. This downturn marks the second consecutive month of declining handle amidst an exciting NBA and NHL playoff season, although no local teams were involved.
Despite the decreased wagering activity, sportsbooks enjoyed a profitable month, realizing a dramatic 34.4% spike in taxable revenue, which contributed over $20 million to state coffers. The $76.1 million in gross revenue represents the best performance for Pennsylvania since January, reflecting an 11.6% hold—indicating the industry’s strong profitability.
FanDuel led the charge in May with a staggering handle of $250.8 million and $34.5 million in gross revenue. DraftKings followed with $167.3 million in wagers and a revenue of $19.4 million—also reflecting strong performance despite a drop from the previous month. Other operators, including BetMGM and Fanatics Sportsbook, also reported solid figures, though none surpassed FanDuel’s dominance.
Furthermore, the Keystone State’s overall gaming revenue shattered records, surpassing $600 million for the first time, with total profits reaching $601.8 million—a 15.5% annual increase. This success was largely propelled by a remarkable 33.8% surge in iGaming revenue, totaling $232.8 million. The state continues to affirm its status as a leading player in the national gaming landscape.
