Celebrating Physical Fitness: ODP Partners with Special Olympics

This spring, the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) proudly celebrated Physical Fitness & Sports Month in collaboration with Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA). Marking the event, ODP attended SOPA’s Central Spring Sectional competition held at Saint Francis University, where athletes showcased their skills across six sports, including aquatics, athletics (track and field), basketball, golf, and tennis.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity for all ages. ODP emphasizes that any activity that elevates the heart rate qualifies as movement. Adults are encouraged to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, complemented by muscle-strengthening exercises on two different days. Simple activities like walking, dancing, or even gardening can contribute to this goal.

For children and teens aged 6 to 17, the requirement is at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. This should predominantly consist of moderate-intensity activities, with vigorous effort included three times a week. Additionally, muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening exercises should also be incorporated at least three times weekly.

To foster a sense of community and motivation, ODP invites individuals to share their personal fitness journeys. Those interested can submit their stories via email with the subject line “Move Your Way,” and may have their experiences featured on MyODP News Online. Participants are required to complete a Department of Human Services (DHS) Media Release Form when submitting their narratives.

By promoting physical fitness and offering platforms for sharing stories, ODP and SOPA are championing a culture of health and wellness, underscoring the vital role of physical activity in leading a fulfilling life.
