EF-2 Tornado Strikes Erie County, Pennsylvania, Causing Structural Damage but No Injuries
Erie County, PA – June 10, 2025
An EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) touched down in eastern Erie County on June 9, 2025, at 5:49 PM local time, causing extensive structural damage but thankfully resulting in no human injuries.
The tornado originated northwest of the intersection of Plum Road and Page Road, where it displayed visible ground swirls. As it moved northeast, it uprooted a large tree and demolished a barn along Knoyle Road, which housed several vehicles and trailers. The barn was obliterated, with debris scattering into adjacent fields and woodlands. Tragically, several livestock—including two horses and multiple cows—were killed during the incident.
A nearby home sustained moderate damage, with torn siding, broken windows, and a blown-out side door reported. The tornado followed a path of approximately 1.7 km (1.06 miles) and dissipated in a wooded area by 5:52 PM, having caused significant but localized destruction.
This tornado was part of a regional severe weather outbreak linked to a potent shortwave trough affecting the Ohio Valley, characterized by high vertical wind shear values.
In addition to the EF-2 tornado, two other tornadoes were confirmed during the event: an EF-1 tornado in Holmes County, Ohio, which damaged trees and homes, and an EF-0 tornado that moved ashore from Lake Canadohta, Pennsylvania, damaging tree limbs and power infrastructure.
The EF-2 tornado is noted as the 17th confirmed in Pennsylvania this year and the first classified as significant on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Authorities continue to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.
