Press Release
Recent Measles Surge in the U.S. Highlights Ongoing Outbreaks Across North America
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 122 new measles cases in the U.S. this week, bringing the nationwide total to 1,168 confirmed cases. Only four of these new cases were identified in Texas, where the nation’s largest outbreak was documented earlier this year. Health officials in Texas have indicated they will now report case numbers weekly, suggesting the outbreak is subsiding.
Outbreaks remain prevalent across North America, with Ontario, Canada, experiencing the longest standing surge, reporting 2,009 cases since mid-October. This week, Ontario reported its first measles-related death in a baby with congenital measles complications. Meanwhile, Alberta has reported 761 cases, and Chihuahua, Mexico, has 1,940 confirmed cases and four fatalities.
In the U.S., active outbreaks are ongoing in several states, including Colorado, North Dakota, and Ohio. Tragically, two unvaccinated school-aged children from Texas and one adult in New Mexico have died from the disease this year.
Measles, a highly contagious virus spread through respiratory droplets, had been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000. However, thousands of cases now trace back to unvaccinated individuals returning from abroad. The CDC reported that imported cases were more than double compared to the previous year.
To combat this concerning trend, the CDC stresses the importance of the MMR vaccine, recommended for children at 12-15 months and again between 4-6 years. The agency cautions that vaccination rates have dipped nationwide due to the pandemic, urging parents to check their children’s vaccination status to prevent further outbreaks.
As measles cases continue to rise, public health officials highlight vaccination as a critical preventive measure to protect communities and ensure herd immunity.
