Isolated John Fetterman Faces Tension with Colleagues and Staff Amid Senate Absences

Press Article: Fetterman Faces Growing Isolation and Criticism Amid Health Concerns

As the Senate approaches the vote to confirm Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, Democratic frustrations are rising with Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, whose potential support for Hegseth has sparked concern across party lines. Fetterman, known for his unorthodox style and straight-talking demeanor, has reportedly distanced himself from colleagues and official duties, raising questions about his fitness for office following a well-documented battle with clinical depression.

Senator Patty Murray, a senior member of Fetterman’s party, attempted to discuss his position on Hegseth but his refusal to meet was reflective of growing isolation. Sources claim Fetterman’s behavior has become increasingly erratic, including lengthy, self-centered monologues and erratic voting record; he missed 77 of 381 votes last year, ranking among the highest for absences in the Senate.

Concerns about Fetterman’s health have been echoed by former staff, including his ex-chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, who described worrying signs in a letter to the senator’s psychiatrist. Jentleson noted Fetterman’s disengagement could jeopardize his political relationships, with many insiders questioning his ability to effectively represent Pennsylvania.

Despite these issues, Fetterman maintains that he is in good health and committed to his role as senator. His spokesperson emphasized his dedication to serving Pennsylvania, saying, “He is not an extrovert. This is how he functions.”

While peers like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have voiced support for Fetterman, public calls for his resignation grow louder, especially from constituents frustrated by his lack of engagement. The debate surrounding his suitability for office continues, with many in Pennsylvania concerned about their representation in Washington.
