Bass Season Opens in Pennsylvania: Anglers Gear Up for June 14 Start

PENNSYLVANIA—Bass season kicks off statewide at midnight on Saturday, June 14, marking a long-awaited opportunity for local anglers eager to cast their lines. The daily limit is set at six fish, each measuring 12 inches or longer.

Unlike the opening day of trout season, which attracts massive crowds, bass season is anticipated to draw a smaller, albeit enthusiastic, group of fishing aficionados. This is largely because bass are not stocked in the same high numbers as trout, making them a more challenging catch for many.

Pennsylvania boasts a wealth of fishing options, ranging from smaller lakes and ponds to expansive bodies of water, including Sayers Lake and the Juniata River. There are also several lakes under special regulations within the Big Bass Program, which mandates a minimum size of 15 inches and limits the daily catch to four fish. Notable locations include Canoe Creek Lake and Shawnee Lake.

The stars of the season are the largemouth and smallmouth bass. The largemouth bass reigns as the most popular freshwater game fish in the U.S., thriving in a variety of habitats. Conversely, smallmouth bass, originally native to Eastern U.S., prefer clearer waters and rocky structures.

Anglers are drawn to bass for their tenacity and sizable average weights. The world record for largemouth bass is an impressive 22 pounds, while Pennsylvania’s state record stands at 11 pounds, 3 ounces. Smallmouth bass also have formidable records, with the world record being 11 pounds, 15 ounces.

Both species are highly adaptable predators, willing to strike a variety of lures, which has spurred an ongoing demand for fishing gear. As the season approaches, tackle manufacturers can expect sustained enthusiasm from the angling community.
