Pennsylvania’s Decline in State Rankings Signals Ongoing Slide into Mediocrity | John Baer

Pennsylvania Falls to #41 in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

In the latest annual ranking of U.S. states by U.S. News & World Report, Pennsylvania finds itself languishing at an unhappy #41, a decline from last year’s #40. Despite the presence of states like Alabama and Mississippi ranked lower, the report highlights a troubling trend for the Keystone State, which has slipped steadily since reaching #30 in 2017.

The rankings, released last week, assess states based on 71 metrics spanning areas such as economy, health, education, crime, and infrastructure. This year, Pennsylvania ranks last among the nine northeastern states, with neighboring New Jersey sitting comfortably at #19. It also holds the bottom spot among the four commonwealths, trailing behind Kentucky, Virginia, and Massachusetts.

Key areas contributing to Pennsylvania’s poor showing include education at #39, despite record spending and a recent court order aimed at equal school funding. Infrastructure hovers even lower at #43, while fiscal stability is rated at #39, challenging state leaders’ claims of sound financial management.

The rankings serve as a wake-up call for Pennsylvania’s political leaders as they draft the new state budget. Addressing structural deficits and establishing sustainable funding for essential services like roads, transit, and education could lift the state from its bottom-tier status.

As the state grapples with ongoing challenges, it’s clear that without strategic shifts in leadership and policy, Pennsylvania risks falling deeper into a cycle of mediocrity. With the legislative incumbency rate hitting 100% in the last election, it raises questions about accountability and the need for change in governance.

For now, Pennsylvania remains in a precarious position as it aims for revitalization in an increasingly competitive landscape.
