Lionel Revives Pennsylvania RR S2 Steam Turbine for 125th Anniversary
In a significant homage to its heritage, Lionel has reintroduced the classic Pennsylvania Railroad S2 Steam Turbine model in O gauge, coinciding with its 125th anniversary. The release, highlighted in their 2025 Catalog Volume One, marks a celebratory revival of an iconic locomotive that first rolled out in 1946.
The original S2 was Lionel’s first new locomotive of the postwar era, launched as Nos. 671 and 2020. Though the designs catered to market demands, the earlier models lacked true O scale proportions, which disappointed purists. However, the upgraded editions, including the No. 681 and No. 682, featured enhancements such as Magne-Traction, which appealed to collectors at the time.
The new model, designated as No. 2531630, boasts remarkable advancements. Measuring 30 inches in length—as opposed to its predecessors—it includes modern features like Legacy control, RailSounds, and Bluetooth capabilities, making it superior in both size and technology. The design remains faithful to the original while integrating sophisticated elements like turbine exhaust sounds, directional lighting, and a die-cast metal body.
Additionally, Lionel’s latest catalog presents a range of variants inspired by the Turbine’s history, including two prototypical versions reflecting its original cab numbers and unique designs inspired by industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Fantasy paint schemes also pay homage to other renowned railroads, offering collectors an exciting array of options.
With this revival, Lionel not only rescues a piece of its history but also fulfills the dreams of model train enthusiasts, merging nostalgia with modern innovation. The Pennsylvania RR S2 Steam Turbine is poised to become a treasured addition for collectors and fans as it re-emerges bigger and better than ever.
