Pennsylvania Food Banks Concerned About Proposed SNAP Cuts in Federal Budget Bill

Press Release: Food Banks Alarmed by Proposed Cuts to SNAP in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania – Leaders from various food banks and state officials voiced grave concerns over a recent budget bill headed to the U.S. Senate, which threatens to significantly impact food assistance programs across the state. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is crucial for nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians, providing essential food access in times of need.

Jennifer Miller, CEO of the Westmoreland Food Bank, highlighted the program’s importance, stating, “For every meal the food bank provides, SNAP provides nine meals.” However, the recently passed House reconciliation bill proposes nearly $300 billion in cuts to SNAP through 2034, prompting fears that over 140,000 residents might lose access to vital food assistance.

The proposed legislation aims to tighten existing work requirements for SNAP, raising concerns among officials about the potential rise in demand for food bank services. “Food banks cannot replace the scale, reach, and stability of the SNAP program,” Miller emphasized, warning that these cuts could drastically increase food insecurity.

Additionally, Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Val Arkoosh indicated that such changes could lead to an annual state budget shortfall exceeding $1 billion, with devastating consequences for both families and the economy. State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding noted that the cuts would also adversely affect local farm families, as approximately 25 cents of every grocery dollar goes back to farms.

Westmoreland County Commissioner Ted Kopas urged community members to advocate against the proposed cuts, stating, “You all have a role in contacting your senators and congresspersons to make your voices heard.”

As the Senate considers this critical issue, food banks across Pennsylvania are preparing for possible challenges in feeding those in need.
