Press Release: River Otters Reclaim Pennsylvania Waters with Help from Researcher and His Loyal Labrador
Blairsville, PA – Once an integral part of Pennsylvania’s river ecosystems, North American river otters faced near extinction due to industrialization and habitat destruction by the early 1900s. However, their recent resurgence is being celebrated as a symbol of improving water quality in the state.
Renowned otter researcher Tom Serfass, a wildlife ecology professor at Frostburg State University, is leading the charge to monitor these playful swimmers using an innovative approach: training his two-year-old Labrador, Merlin. During a training session along the Conemaugh River, Merlin located what Serfass recognized as an otter latrine—clear evidence of the creatures’ return.
“Ottter latrines are surprisingly telling,” Serfass explained. “The vegetation is often disturbed, revealing their presence through behaviors such as grooming and defecating.” He noted that while river otters primarily hunt at night, these latrine sites are often bustling with activity and provide a unique opportunity for research.
Over the past 20 years, Serfass and his students have utilized remote cameras to capture fascinating footage of otters and their behaviors at these sites. “We’ve seen some wonderful scenes, like otters sliding in the snow, showcasing their playful nature,” he remarked.
Serfass’s passion for otters ignited in his youth, influenced by nature documentaries, and now drives his mission to restore their populations in Pennsylvania. This multifaceted research not only highlights the ecological recovery of the region but also raises awareness about the importance of water quality in sustaining wildlife.
As river otters continue to flourish, they serve as a poignant reminder of successful conservation efforts and the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems across Pennsylvania.
