Pennsylvania Senate Passes Save Women’s Sports Act, Supporting Fair Competition for Female Athletes
HARRISBURG – In a significant bipartisan effort, the Pennsylvania Senate has approved Senate Bill 9, known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, aimed at ensuring that athletic teams designated for women are exclusively reserved for biological females. The bill, which is now set to be considered by the House of Representatives, seeks to uphold fairness, safety, and competitive opportunities for female athletes in K-12 and collegiate sports.
The legislation has garnered support from a coalition of Senators, including Judy Ward, Kristin Phillips-Hill, and Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward, among others. Following the bill’s passage, the sponsors emphasized the importance of safeguarding the opportunities guaranteed to women under Title IX.
“This is about standing up for the next generation of female athletes,” Phillips-Hill stated, underscoring the need for a level playing field to ensure fair competition and scholarship opportunities. Baker added that the bill is essential to eliminate “unfair physical advantages” in women’s sports.
Brooks stressed the responsibility of lawmakers to protect the integrity of female athletics, affirming that every opportunity earned should be based on fair competition. Culver and Keefer echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for equitable conditions in sports for women and girls.
Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward celebrated the passage, saying, “Today is a great day for female athletes across Pennsylvania,” reaffirming commitment to preserving fair competition and equal opportunities in sports.
The Save Women’s Sports Act reinforces the foundational principles of Title IX, ensuring that female athletes are not deprived of scholarships and opportunities due to competition from biological males, thereby protecting the future of women in athletics.
