Tragic Car Accident Claims Lives of Indian Students from Cleveland State University

Lancaster, Pennsylvania – In a heartbreaking incident, two students from Cleveland State University, Manav Patel (20) and Saurav Prabhakar (23), lost their lives in a car accident in Lancaster City last Saturday, May 10. The single-vehicle crash occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Brecknock Township, where the car driven by Prabhakar crashed into a tree and then a bridge.

Local authorities reported that the tragic accident unfolded around 7 AM. While Patel and Prabhakar succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries, another passenger seated in the front sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital. The Lancaster County coroner’s office classified the deaths as accidental.

The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this difficult time," and assured the families of the two students that they would provide necessary assistance.

This accident is not an isolated incident for Indian students abroad. Just last month, 21-year-old Harsimrat Kaur Randhawa was fatally injured by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop in Canada. Such recent tragedies echo broader concerns regarding the safety of Indian students internationally.

According to the Indian government’s Ministry of External Affairs, there have been at least 91 reported cases of attacks on Indian students studying overseas in the last five years, with 30 resulting in fatalities. The union minister of state for external affairs emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian students abroad, vowing vigilance and prompt action in the wake of such incidents.

This incident highlights the precarious landscape of safety for students pursuing education in foreign territories and the need for continued support and oversight from governmental bodies.
