Mifflin County’s Carter Smith clinches Mid-Penn track titles with perseverance

Carter Smith Claims 1,600-Meter Title at Mid-Penn Conference Championships

Chambersburg, PA — Mifflin County’s Carter Smith surged to victory in the 1,600-meter run at the 2025 Mid-Penn Conference Championships held at Trojan Stadium on Saturday, clocking in at 4:04.29. Smith’s impressive finish came after he heeded his coach’s advice to “stay attached” during the race, ultimately overcoming UPenn signee Vinay Raman of Hershey, who finished with a silver time of 4:05.42.

Reflecting on his performance, Smith emphasized the importance of staying close to the lead runner: “At Penn Relays, I got second and was disappointed because I didn’t attach myself. I knew if I could stay close with 300 meters to go, I had a strong chance.”

In addition to his individual triumph, Smith anchored Mifflin County’s 4×800 relay team, which also finished first with a time of 8:00.21, leading ahead of Carlisle and Palmyra.

This season has been monumental for Smith, who recently captured the PIAA Class 3A title in cross country and the PTFCA title in the 800-meter with a time of 1:51.11. His dedication to both sports has played a pivotal role in his success: “I’m blessed to have good coaching, and cross country really opened new doors for me,” he remarked.

As Smith prepares for the District 6 meet and aims for another strong performance at the PIAA championships, where he previously earned bronzes in the 800-meter and narrowly missed the podium in the 1,600-meter, he remains focused on enjoying the journey. “I just have to stay out of my head and have fun with it,” he stated.

With his remarkable achievements, the excitement is palpable as Smith looks toward the season’s grand finale.
