Title: Paralympic Champion Amanda McGrory Reflects on Life-Changing Camp Experience
Philadelphia, PA – Amanda McGrory, a seven-time Paralympic medalist, recently revisited Variety Club Camp, a place that played a pivotal role in her journey from paralysis to triumph. Introduced to the world by CBS News Philadelphia 27 years ago, McGrory has since made extraordinary strides in her athletic career and personal life.
At just 5 years old, a rare disorder left McGrory suddenly paralyzed. However, it was at the Montgomery County Variety Camp, which she attended at age 7, where she discovered a sense of community and acceptance. “It was the first time that I had ever met any other kids with disabilities,” McGrory recalled, emphasizing how the camp nurtured her confidence and allowed her to simply be herself without the burden of self-consciousness.
In an emotional reflection, McGrory highlighted the significance of the camp in fostering her growth. "Coming to a place like this… to try new things, to grow, and to build my confidence. It all started here," she stated.
McGrory’s early involvement in sports, particularly basketball and racing, laid the foundation for her impressive athletic career. She made headlines in 1997 expressing her gratitude for being able to compete, a mindset that propelled her to achieve remarkable feats, including becoming a world record holder and gold medalist at the 2008 Paralympic Games.
Now at age 37, McGrory serves as an archivist for Team USA in Colorado and maintains a keen involvement in broadcasting and advocacy for the Variety Camp. As she continues to inspire others with her story of resilience, McGrory poignantly reflects, “Camp fun turned into destiny.”
