Press Release: Western Pennsylvania Communities Combat Population Decline with New Incentives
As Western Pennsylvania faces significant population declines over the next 25 years, local communities are innovatively addressing the issue, even offering cash incentives to attract new residents. Sharon and Hermitage in Mercer County are at the forefront, providing $5,000 to each household that relocates to their areas, along with additional perks such as YMCA memberships and access to coworking spaces through a partnership with MakeMyMove, an online relocation platform.
Adriana Krasnow, a remote worker from San Diego, is among those intrigued by the initiative. A former Hermitage resident, she is moving back with her family to embrace a more affordable lifestyle and the community spirit she fondly remembers.
With Mercer County experiencing a yearly 1% population decline, officials like Jake Rickert of the Penn-Northwest Development Corp. emphasize the economic urgency of attracting newcomers. Population loss not only diminishes tax revenue but also impacts schools and infrastructure funding.
Although the MakeMyMove campaign received a striking 157 applicants during its pilot phase, only five households can be accepted due to limited funding. The Rural Population Revitalization Commission, established by state lawmakers, aims to develop strategies to bolster rural populations, which just two counties in the region are projected to grow over 25 years.
While some counties, like Butler, continue to grow due to appealing living conditions, the overall trend indicates a grim forecast for many rural areas. The state’s rural commission has recommended changes, such as redefining high-speed internet criteria, to enhance quality of life and attract new residents.
With ongoing discussions with MakeMyMove by several regions, Western Pennsylvania is actively seeking solutions to combat the trend of population decline, aiming to rejuvenate and strengthen its communities.
