Billerica, MA — On a chilly January day, Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial Energy, received a pivotal message: a video showcasing a Mercedes sedan equipped with Factorial’s solid-state battery. This marked a significant milestone in a decade-long journey to reshape the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

Factorial Energy’s innovation aims to enhance battery safety, efficiency, and sustainability, directly addressing transportation’s role as the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike traditional batteries, solid-state technology replaces flammable liquid electrolytes with solid or gel-like substances, promising faster charging and greater energy density.

Despite the excitement, challenges remain. The Mercedes prototype, which operates without liquid cooling, has yet to undergo extensive road testing, an essential step before mass production. Huang, who co-founded Factorial with her husband, Alex Yu, is navigating a landscape crowded with competitors, including established names like Toyota and new entrants like QuantumScape.

Originating from Nanjing, China, Huang’s passion for cleaner energy was sparked by her childhood experiences with pollution. After earning advanced degrees from Cornell University, she and Yu founded Factorial, focusing on improving battery materials before pivoting to solid-state technology with support from Mercedes.

The road to production has not been easy. Initial yields at Factorial’s pilot factory in South Korea were alarmingly low, but as of late 2023, the company achieved a remarkable 85% yield. This progress is promising as the team prepares to integrate their batteries into a fleet of vehicles.

With automotive giants eyeing solid-state batteries, the industry anticipates widespread availability by 2030. Huang’s journey from a student in China to a pioneer in sustainable technology embodies the potential for innovation in combating climate change. As Factorial’s momentum grows, the future of electric vehicles appears brighter than ever.
