OpenAI Appoints Instacart CEO to Lead Business and Operations

OpenAI Appoints Fidji Simo as Chief Executive of Applications Amid Rapid Growth

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced the appointment of Fidji Simo, the former CEO of Instacart, as its Chief Executive of Applications, a move aimed at streamlining the company’s business and operations. OpenAI’s founder and CEO, Sam Altman, clarified that while he retains overall leadership, Simo’s role will allow him to focus on critical areas such as research, computing, and safety systems.

In a blog post, Altman emphasized the company’s transformation into a global product enterprise, catering to millions of users and expanding rapidly. He described OpenAI as also becoming an "infrastructure company" that delivers AI tools at scale, making strong leadership essential for managing its extensive initiatives.

Simo, who will report directly to Altman, will oversee the company’s sales, marketing, and finance operations. Earlier this year, OpenAI raised $40 billion, primarily led by SoftBank, achieving a valuation of $300 billion, positioning it as one of the world’s most valuable private firms. However, the transition from its nonprofit roots has faced challenges, attracting scrutiny over profit motives. In a recent reversal, OpenAI decided to maintain nonprofit oversight amid concerns from high-profile critics—including co-founder Elon Musk.

In her statement, Simo expressed her commitment to utilizing AI for enhancing human potential, particularly in healthcare, and acknowledged the immense impact this technology could have on society. She will continue at Instacart for the next few months, ensuring a smooth transition of responsibilities.

Instacart confirmed that Simo’s departure is not indicative of operational changes, reinforcing its stable trajectory during this transition.
