Pennsylvania Governor Remains Silent on Controversial Women’s Sports Bill
HARRISBURG, PA — After the Pennsylvania Senate approved Senate Bill 9, the Save Women’s Sports Act, in a bipartisan vote of 32-18, Governor Josh Shapiro has refrained from publicly stating whether he will support or veto the measure. The bill aims to prevent biological males from competing in women’s sports, a topic Shapiro previously condemned as discriminatory against transgender youth.
Despite multiple inquiries from The Daily Signal, Shapiro’s office has not provided a response. In 2021, while serving as attorney general, he voiced strong opposition to similar legislation, asserting that it was "designed to discriminate against transgender youth."
The bill, which garnered support from five Democrats and 27 Republicans, raises significant concern among Pennsylvania Democrats, who suspect that the proposal is unlikely to advance in the House, where Democrats hold a slim majority. Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa referred to it as unnecessary and unconstitutional, suggesting that it serves political motives rather than addressing genuine concerns.
Proponents of the bill, including Democratic Senator Lisa Boscola, argue that biological differences create inherent advantages in athletics. Citing the case of Lia Thomas, a swimmer who transitioned from male to female, Boscola illustrated the stark disparities in competitive performance before and after Thomas’s transition.
As the bill heads to the House, uncertainty surrounds its fate. With key figures dismissing it as political theater, including House Majority Leader Matt Bradford’s spokeswoman, the legislation remains a contentious point in Pennsylvania politics. Governor Shapiro’s position on the issue is closely watched, especially considering his future political aspirations. The outcome could set a significant precedent in the ongoing national debate over transgender athletes in sports.
