Pennsylvania State Police Establish New Security Unit for Governor’s Residence Following Arson Incident

HARRISBURG — In response to a recent arson attack, the Pennsylvania State Police has launched a new uniformed unit to enhance security at the governor’s residence along the Susquehanna River. State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris announced the formation of this unit in a letter to legislative leaders on Tuesday.

The newly established unit will utilize marked police vehicles to provide a heightened visual presence at the residence where Governor Josh Shapiro and his family reside while he is in Harrisburg. This initiative complements the existing special detail unit that already secures the governor and other high-ranking officials at events both public and private, with around-the-clock staff stationed in the residence.

While specifics about the number of uniformed officers assigned to the residence remain undisclosed, Paris noted that they will undergo emergency response training. Future security enhancements will include visible improvements like an “anti-climb” fence, among other measures meant to bolster safety.

Paris’s announcement follows a security review by Jeffrey Miller, a former State Police commissioner, contracted to evaluate the existing protocols post-attack. Miller’s comprehensive risk assessment covered various aspects, including monitoring systems and duty assignments but will not be publicly disclosed due to the sensitive nature of its contents.

The April 13 attack, attributed to 38-year-old Cody Balmer, involved the suspect scaling the residence’s perimeter, setting fires with Molotov cocktails, and damaging several rooms before fleeing the scene. Balmer has since been charged with attempted homicide and terrorism. The investigation continues with an internal assessment of the actions of troopers present during the incident.

As security evolves, the State Police emphasize the importance of safeguarding public officials and their families.
