Uber Passenger Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Driver’s Murder
Pittsburgh, PA – Calvin Crew, 25, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the brutal murder of Uber driver Christina Spicuzza, a 38-year-old mother of four, in February 2022. Spicuzza’s family expressed compassion towards Crew, requesting that he not receive the death penalty, despite the heinous nature of the crime.
At his sentencing on Monday, held at the Allegheny County Courthouse, Spicuzza’s family delivered emotional impact statements, highlighting the devastation caused by her loss. “You executed her. No mercy, no remorse. It was abhorrent. It was murder,” said Cindy Spicuzza, Christina’s mother.
On the night of the murder, surveillance footage captured Crew brandishing a gun shortly after Spicuzza picked him up. In a harrowing video, Spicuzza pleaded for her life, stating, “I have a family.” Crew responded, “I got a family too,” before forcing her to continue driving. Her body was discovered two days later in a wooded area, with a single gunshot wound to the head.
During the hearing, Spicuzza’s fiancé, Brandon Marto, condemned Crew for his absence and called him a coward. He expressed his hope that Crew would “rot and burn in prison.” Crew was also sentenced to an additional 13 to 26 years for kidnapping and robbery.
Crew had denied involvement in the murder, claiming he took a bus home after the ride, but surveillance footage contradicted his story. His defense attorneys cited a troubled upbringing marked by violence and neglect, indicating plans to appeal his conviction.
As the case concludes, Spicuzza’s family seeks to honor her memory and find closure amid their grief.
