Tractor Supply Acquires Former Big Lots Leases Amid Bankruptcy Crisis
Pittsburgh, PA – Tractor Supply Co. announced on June 27, 2024, that it is discontinuing several corporate diversity and climate initiatives, responding to increasing conservative backlash. Meanwhile, the retailer is making waves in the retail landscape by purchasing 19 leases from the bankrupt discount chain Big Lots.
As Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2023 and began shuttering stores in December, retailers like Ocean State Job Lot, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, and Burlington seized the opportunity to acquire leases through auction. Tractor Supply emerged as a significant player in this scenario, acquiring locations across 15 states, including a specific store in Pennsylvania’s Hershey Square shopping center in Derry Township.
The new stores acquired by Tractor Supply include prominent locations in Newington, CT; Lakeland, FL; Athens, GA; and several others, expanding its footprint in key markets. The acquisition aligns with Tractor Supply’s positioning as a “rural lifestyle retailer,” with the company operating 2,296 stores in 49 states by the end of December 2024.
This strategic move comes as the retail landscape adjusts following Big Lots’ decline, indicating not only the challenges facing discount retailers but also the potential growth avenues for Tractor Supply. The company’s recent decisions on corporate initiatives, amidst fluctuating public sentiments, highlight the complex dynamics of today’s retail environment.
As many retailers navigate bankruptcy and closure challenges, the acquisition of former Big Lots locations may provide Tractor Supply with an opportunity to enhance its offerings and broaden its customer base, solidifying its standing in the rural lifestyle market.
