Pennsylvania 4-H Members Make Impact at National Conference in D.C.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Four Pennsylvania 4-H members recently participated in the National 4-H Conference held from April 11-16 in Washington, D.C., aiming to influence high-level government discussions with their youthful perspectives. Delegates included John Bruner (Indiana County), Adrian Davis (Franklin County), Adelaide Miller (Clinton County), and Trevor Fetterman (Somerset County).
The conference provided an opportunity for youth aged 15-19 to engage in roundtable discussions on urgent national issues. Participants brainstormed solutions before presenting their proposals to federal agencies. "This event has greatly enhanced my leadership skills and highlighted our ability to impact the world," remarked Davis, who advocated for digital literacy in the workforce to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Bruner’s group presented recommendations on engaging young people in agriculture to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee. Meanwhile, Miller’s team addressed strategies to renew interest in rural living among graduates to the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture. Fetterman’s group proposed initiatives to enhance youth engagement with public lands to the U.S. Forest Service, emphasizing the use of social media and improved accessibility.
"The conference reinforced the power of youth voice," said Jeanette Stackhouse, 4-H education specialist at Penn State Extension. Participants visited Capitol Hill, connected with legislators, and networked with peers nationwide. Fetterman and Miller both reflected on how the experience bolstered their understanding of government processes and enhanced their communication skills.
The conference not only aimed to empower youth but also to showcase the vital role they play in shaping future policies. Managed by Penn State Extension, 4-H is designed to develop capable, caring, and contributing citizens. For more information on local 4-H programs, visit the Pennsylvania 4-H website.
