Hershey Civil War Roundtable: Exploring the Final Days of the Confederacy

Hershey Civil War Roundtable Hosts Historian Robert M. Dunkerly

The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will convene on Thursday, May 15, at the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 542, located at 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. The meeting, slated for 7:30 p.m., will also be streamed live via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The evening will feature acclaimed historian and author Robert M. (Bert) Dunkerly, who will deliver a presentation entitled “Surrender of Greensboro, NC.” With a rich background that includes work at nine historic sites and authorship of 11 books and over 20 articles, Dunkerly is well-equipped to dive into the complexities of the final days of the Confederacy.

His talk will focus on the often-misunderstood aspects surrounding the various surrenders that marked the end of the Civil War. “There would be no single surrender or treaty that brought the war to an end,” Dunkerly notes. Instead, he argues, the Confederacy’s demise was a fragmented process, with its government fleeing, cities occupied, and armies surrendering piece by piece.

Dunkerly’s recent work, “To the Bitter End: Appomattox, Bennett Place, and the Surrenders of the Confederacy,” examines these lesser-known events, revealing little-known facts and challenging prevalent myths about this tumultuous time. Each surrender, from Appomattox to Citronelle and the Trans-Mississippi, followed a unique course, raising pressing questions about the Confederacy’s collapse.

The event is complimentary and open to the public, inviting all to engage in this pivotal historical discussion. For those unable to attend, the presentation will be available on the organization’s website afterward.
