Google Launches AI Chatbot Gemini for Kids Under 13 Amid Concerns

The chatbot’s access will be facilitated through Family Link, a Google service enabling parental control over a child’s Gmail and app usage. Parents must provide personal details like their child’s name and birth date to set up an account. Google spokesman Karl Ryan emphasized that Gemini incorporates specific safeguards to prevent exposure to unsafe content and reassured parents that their children’s data will not be used to train the AI.
Despite the potential benefits, the introduction of Gemini has sparked concern among child advocacy groups regarding safety and misinformation risks. UNICEF and other organizations have warned that generative AI can confuse and mislead young users, who may not distinguish between AI-generated responses and human interaction.
In an email to families, Google acknowledged the platform’s limitations, urging parents to help their children think critically about the responses from Gemini and reminding them to avoid sharing personal information. The rollout strategy aims to adhere to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, ensuring compliance while allowing parents to manage their child’s engagement with the tool.
