Deadline Approaches for Pennsylvania REAL ID Compliance
As the deadline for REAL ID enforcement approaches, Pennsylvania residents are urged to secure their upgraded identification by May 7. The REAL ID is crucial for boarding domestic flights and entering military and federal buildings, replacing standard state-issued identification for certain uses.
The REAL ID initiative aims to enhance identification standards. For those who haven’t yet obtained a REAL ID, Pennsylvania offers a $30 upgrade option, allowing residents to choose between this and their existing driver’s license.
Despite the deadline looming, over 70% of residents have yet to transition to the new IDs. As of May 1, only 28% of Pennsylvania residents had obtained a REAL ID, according to Aimee Inama, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). “We have processed over 40,000 people who have attended our REAL ID Days since launching the initiative,” Inama reported.
Originally, Monday, May 5, was earmarked as the final REAL ID Day; however, due to high demand, a new session will be held on May 12. “We’re continuously exploring options to provide optimal service. I encourage residents to visit our website for upcoming REAL ID Days and available opportunities,” Inama emphasized.
Residents are reminded that without a REAL ID or an alternative form of approved federal identification, traveling and accessing federal facilities will not be possible after the deadline. The push to increase REAL ID uptake highlights the importance of preparedness as states across the nation implement similar standards.
