Major Hospital Closures in Pennsylvania Result in Mass Layoffs
Upland, PA – Prospect Medical Holdings has announced the imminent closure of several facilities in Pennsylvania, leading to the layoff of over 2,600 employees. The closures, affecting operations in Delaware and Chester counties, include the Crozer-Chester Medical Center and its various units, as well as Crozer-Springfield Hospital and Crozer-Taylor Hospital.
The layoffs, which will take place from April 21 to May 2, were disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. This represents one of the largest job losses in the state in recent history, prompting at least three municipalities—including the city of Chester—to declare states of emergency. These declarations aim to expedite responses to heightened public health risks posed by reduced emergency medical services.
The closure of the Crozer Emergency Room has raised concerns about increased transport times to nearby medical facilities. Chester Mayor Stefan Roots expressed distress over the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect residents’ access to emergency care.
Prospect Medical’s financial troubles led to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January. Despite initial efforts to find a buyer, including a proposed agreement for $5 million in funding from the University of Pennsylvania Health System, the deal fell through, leaving the organization without viable options.
Emergency declarations have enabled local governments to better coordinate staffing and services in anticipation of the disruptions. As communities brace for the fallout, officials are actively exploring solutions to mitigate the impact on essential healthcare access in the region.
The recent developments reflect a significant crisis amidst an evolving landscape of healthcare delivery in Pennsylvania.
