A man charged with making threats against President Donald Trump was also found to have threatened Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, according to a source familiar with the matter. The suspect, Shawn Monper of Butler, Pennsylvania, allegedly made threats against Mace on social media in January, stating that he would like to put a bullet in her skull if he ever saw her unprotected in public.
Mace, who is known for being an outspoken Trump ally, appears to be the only member of Congress targeted by Monper. The threats against Mace come amid heightened concerns about escalating threats against elected officials from both sides of the political spectrum.
Monper was also found to have made threats against Trump on YouTube, leading to failed assassination attempts during the 2024 election. He had obtained a firearms permit shortly after Trump’s inauguration and made concerning posts about mass shootings and targeting ICE officials and Elon Musk.
The U.S. Secret Service and Capitol Police were alerted to the threats made by Monper. Mace confirmed the incident, condemning political violence and stating that those who attempt to assassinate elected officials are terrorists who should never see the light of day again. She emphasized the importance of speaking out against such actions and vowed not to be intimidated or silenced.
The FBI is currently investigating the threats made by Monper, and authorities are working to ensure the safety of all individuals targeted. The incident sheds light on the increasing problem of political violence and the urgent need to address and confront such behavior.
