The Rise of Measles: Understanding the Potential Risks for Pennsylvania • Spotlight PA

This year has seen a significant resurgence of measles cases in the United States, with over 700 confirmed cases since the beginning of 2025. The CDC confirmed the first three deaths due to measles since 2015. While Pennsylvania has not reported any deaths, nine cases have been reported across multiple counties. The drop in measles vaccination rates can be attributed to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase in anti-vaccine sentiment.

Dr. Amesh Adalja, an expert on infectious diseases, emphasized the importance of vaccination in combating measles outbreaks. He highlighted certain populations in Pennsylvania, such as Orthodox Jewish communities and the Mennonite, as being vulnerable to outbreaks due to lower vaccination rates. Adalja also discussed the impact of federal funding cuts on the ability of local health departments to respond to outbreaks and provide care.

Measles typically presents with symptoms such as cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash. Individuals who suspect they or someone they are caring for may have measles should seek testing to confirm the diagnosis. Urgent medical attention is necessary if symptoms worsen, such as persistent fever, fatigue, or difficulty breathing. Adalja stressed the importance of public awareness and transparency in reporting measles cases to prevent the spread of the virus.
