Man detained following suspected arson assault at governor’s residence

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence was severely damaged in a suspected arson attack, with a 38-year-old man, Cody Balmer, facing charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. The attack occurred after Shapiro and his family celebrated the first night of Passover at home. Authorities believe Balmer had a homemade incendiary device and was able to start the fire inside the residence.

Shapiro and his family were unharmed but their home in Harrisburg suffered significant damage. Police evacuated them while firefighters extinguished the blaze. The suspect was arrested in the area and it is still unclear what his motives were. Shapiro, often mentioned as a potential White House contender, vowed not to be deterred by the attack.

The Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence, a 29,000 sq ft Georgian-style home, has housed eight governors and has been a target of previous security threats. Shapiro, who has been governor since 2023, was once considered as a running mate for former Vice-President Kamala Harris but she chose another candidate during her presidential campaign. Authorities had offered a reward for information on the attack, but it remains unclear if a tip led to Balmer’s arrest. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and the reason behind the arson attack.
