Pennsylvania Can and Should Take Steps to Better Support Individuals Living with Brain Injuries [Letter to the Editor]

In 2003, Ellie LaCasse’s son Ben was left with cognitive issues after suffering a traumatic brain injury at 8 years old. After years of struggling to find appropriate care and services for Ben, the family found Acadia NeuroRehab, which provided Ben with the support he needed to thrive. Despite living with the cognitive ability of a 12-year-old, Ben has been able to live a full life into his 50s with the help of professional residential care and companionship from Acadia.

However, with only 13 brain injury providers left in Pennsylvania and no increase in funding for 13 years, many individuals are not as fortunate as Ben. Currently, there are around 300 people on a waiting list for brain injury services in the state, with about half a million Pennsylvanians living with a brain injury. Due to a lack of funding, many residential brain injury providers have either left Pennsylvania or reduced their services.

Ellie LaCasse is urging the General Assembly to increase funding for brain injury providers and services in Pennsylvania to ensure that more individuals like Ben can receive the necessary support and care they deserve. By increasing funding for brain injury services, more individuals with brain injuries can have access to the care they need to grow and thrive.
