Several Lancaster community groups have come together to demand the termination of several Lancaster city police officers after a video surfaced online showing officers arresting three individuals in downtown Lancaster. However, the video does not capture the events that led up to the arrest.
The video, posted on Facebook, shows a Lancaster city police officer kneeling on the back of a person who is laying on the ground and screaming for help. Another officer is seen telling the person filming to back away or else they will be arrested.
The incident took place near North Duke and Chestnut streets in Lancaster city after the individuals were stopped by police for riding bikes without front lights and reflectors. The person who posted the video claims his friends were detained with no regard, and he was also maced by the police.
Community groups including Lancaster Stands Up, Black Voter Outreach, Lancaster Bail Fund, and others released a joint statement calling for the termination of the involved officers. They claim the officers were the aggressors and did not attempt to de-escalate the situation.
The Lancaster city police stated that all use-of-force incidents are subject to review by several authorities within the department. The Deputy Chief of Staff for the mayor’s office indicated that they would defer to the police department’s statement for the time being.
Residents are urged to attend the upcoming Lancaster City Council meeting to address their concerns about the incident. No further comments will be made until the review process is completed.
