HIV stigma ends at this summer camp

Camp Dreamcatcher, a summer camp for HIV-impacted children in Chester County, Pennsylvania, has been providing a safe and fun environment for almost 30 years. Founded during the height of the stigma around HIV in the 1990s, the camp has served thousands of children, all free of charge and staffed by dedicated volunteers like Taj Brown.

Brown, a counselor at the camp since its inception, has been recognized for his commitment to the organization. He has seen children grow up at the camp, some becoming counselors themselves. The camp provides a sense of normalcy for children impacted by HIV, allowing them to bond, play, and express their emotions in a supportive environment.

Over the years, advancements in HIV treatments and prevention have led to a significant decrease in the number of children born with the virus. While Brown dreams of a cure for HIV, he acknowledges the ongoing need for spaces like Camp Dreamcatcher that provide support for children facing life’s challenges.

Despite the progress made in HIV/AIDS care, Camp Dreamcatcher continues to be a place of refuge and community for children impacted by the virus. Brown hopes that more people will create inclusive communities where individuals can feel accepted, supported, and free from judgment.
