The University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 79-78 overtime loss to Harvard at The Palestra on Saturday night. Despite making an incredible comeback to take the lead with just 33 seconds left in regulation, Penn couldn’t hold on as Harvard’s Evan Nelson hit a game-tying three-pointer to force overtime. The Crimson ultimately secured the victory with Robert Hinton sinking crucial foul shots.
This was Penn’s first overtime game of the season and marked their largest comeback of the year, matching a 17-point deficit that they overcame earlier in the season. Senior Nick Spinoso led the Quakers with a career-high 24 points, while sophomore Sam Brown added 19 points and sophomore Augustus Gerhart scored a career-high 12 points.
Harvard’s balanced scoring attack was led by Hinton with 22 points, supported by Thomas Batties II, Chandler Pigge, Austin Hunt, and Evan Nelson, who hit the game-tying shot. The Crimson’s victory kept their Ivy League Tournament hopes alive.
Despite the tough loss, Penn showed resilience in fighting back from a slow start, showcasing their strong interior presence with a significant advantage in points in the paint and rebounding. The team now looks ahead to their final three road games of the season, facing Cornell and Columbia next weekend.
