GOP Lawmaker Aims to Launch Committee in Pennsylvania with DOGE Integration

A top Pennsylvania Republican lawmaker, State Sen. Doug Mastriano, is proposing the creation of a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) modeled after efforts by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. However, the key difference would be that PA DOGE would be a legislative branch project instead of an executive one, under the leadership of Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro. Mastriano, a retired Army colonel, believes the legislature, as the chief appropriator, is better suited to implement efficiency measures.

Inspired by Musk’s original DOGE proposal and his own experience with military bureaucracy, Mastriano aims to tackle fraud, waste, and abuse in state government. The proposed committee would consist of members from both legislative and civilian backgrounds, with the power to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending and departments. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Auditor General Timothy DeFoor would also have a say in selecting members.

Chairman Jarrett Coleman, who supports the idea, stressed the importance of examining state funds and minimizing waste. The proposal, if passed, would be Shapiro’s “ultimate test” of bipartisanship. While Republican support is strong for the PA DOGE, Democrat Sen. Tina Tartaglione and Governor Shapiro have remained silent on the matter.

Advocates like Waynesboro attorney Clint Barkdoll suggest a diverse group of members, including business people and civilians, to provide a broad range of perspectives. If implemented, PA DOGE could bring significant benefits in improving government efficiency and budget accountability at the state level.
