What is Academy Sports? The first stores of their kind in the state

Two new Academy Sports + Outdoors locations will be opening in central Pennsylvania, marking the first time the chain has expanded into the state. This sporting goods chain dates back to 1938 and began as a family business in Texas, eventually expanding to 19 states. The stores carry athletic wear, sports equipment, and outdoor gear from popular brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Yeti.

The first of the two new stores, located in Harrisburg at 5125 Jonestown Road, will be a 65,000-square-foot store. The second store in York, at 2801 E. Market St., will be a 61,000-square-foot space and will be the company’s 300th location. Both stores are expected to employ around 60 people and will open on March 3.

To celebrate their grand openings, each store will donate a $10,000 shopping spree to the Boys & Girls Club, with the Harrisburg store doing so on March 5 and York’s on March 7. Grand opening events for both locations will be held from March 7-9.
