Video: Over 4,000 Rainbows Released into Frances Slocum Lake in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission recently stocked approximately 4,700 Rainbow and golden Rainbow Trout at Frances Slocum Lake in Luzerne County. Despite the frozen lake, the fish were successfully stocked by cutting a hole in the ice and using a hose connected to a hatchery truck. Some larger trophy-sized fish were placed in the lake using nets. The PFBC plans to stock approximately 3.2 million adult trout in 691 streams and 130 lakes open to public angling in 2025, with the average trout being 11 inches long and weighing just over a half-pound. Waterways conservation officer Ty Moon noted that there are some larger brood stock fish as well, reaching up to 20 or 25 inches in size.

The statewide opening day of trout season for 2025 is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th, with a Mentored Youth Trout Day set for Saturday, March 29th. Moon encourages anglers to get out early and find a nice spot along a stream or lake in the Commonwealth for a great day of fishing. The commission is hopeful for good weather on the opening day to ensure a successful start to the trout fishing season.
