Smoke at NYC train station leads to minor injuries and delays

About nine people suffered smoke inhalation injuries due to heavy smoke filling a New York City subway station. The incident occurred when a train hit equipment approaching the 191st Street station in Manhattan. This resulted in a smoke condition at the station, causing significant delays in train service. The FDNY responded to the scene and contained the issue within an hour, confirming that there was no active fire, only smoke. A total of 18 individuals were evaluated for minor injuries, with 16 being transported to local hospitals, nine of whom suffered from smoke inhalation. Commuters described the smoke as thick and difficult to see through, with one witness mentioning that people were close to passing out. Train service on the 1 train was initially suspended but later resumed with severe delays in both directions. Despite the chaotic situation, there were no reports of any fatalities. The cause of the smoke condition was attributed to an object on the track striking the third rail. The FDNY and other emergency responders quickly resolved the issue, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
