Pennsylvania adopts new policy aligning with Trump order regarding transgender athletes in high school sports

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has changed its policy on transgender athletes to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order, removing the previous policy that allowed transgender athletes to compete based on their gender identity. The new policy now defers to school principals to determine a student’s sex when questioned or uncertain and includes a requirement to consult with school solicitors to ensure compliance with Trump’s order.

While some states, like Maine, have signaled defiance against Trump’s order, others are taking a wait-and-see approach. Trump’s order, signed on Feb. 5, gives the federal government the authority to pull funding from entities that allow transgender athletes to participate in ways that may deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, sparking legal challenges.

In response, the NCAA revised its transgender participation policy to limit women’s college sports to athletes assigned female at birth, while the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics effectively banned transgender athletes from women’s sports starting in 2023.

Transgender participation in high school and college sports is believed to be limited, but the issue gained attention during the 2020 presidential campaign as Trump vowed to “keep men out of women’s sports.” The debate over transgender athletes in sports continues to be a contentious and evolving issue at both the state and national levels.
