The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has kicked off its annual trout stocking operations in preparation for the upcoming spring trout season. With the help of volunteers, the PFBC plans to stock approximately 3.2 million adult trout in streams and lakes open to public angling. Species being stocked include Rainbow, golden Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout, with the average size being 11 inches long and weighing over half a pound. The Statewide Opening Day of Trout Season is scheduled for April 5, with a Mentored Youth Trout Day set for March 29.
While Pennsylvania boasts plenty of wild trout streams, the demand for recreational trout fishing exceeds what the natural resource can provide. Therefore, the PFBC stocks waters that lack wild trout to create a seasonal recreational fishery enjoyed by anglers statewide. Stocking is funded through the sale of trout permits, purchased in addition to fishing licenses.
